The Cool Docks

How to get there:

The Cool Docks are at 505 Zhongshan South Road (Zhōngshān Nán Lù, 中山南路), near Fuxing Road (Fùxīng Lù, 复兴路). There's no nearby Metro station, so it's best to take a cab. Tell the driver "Lao Ma Tou." The complex is a short walk south from the easternmost end of Fuxing Lu.

If you're coming from Pudong, why not take the ferry: the Yangjiadu Ferry Pier (Yángjiādù Dùkǒu, 杨家渡渡口) at 1 Zhangyang Road (Zhāngyáng Lù, 张杨路), a short walk south of Lujiazui, is open 24 hours. The ferry drops you at the Fuxing Lu Ferry Pier, five minutes north of the Cool Docks.

Tipped as the new Xintiandi, the Cool Docks (Lǎo Mǎtóu, 老码头) is in a prime location to take advantage of visitors moving between the Bund to the north and the former World Expo site a shortway south along the Huangpu River.

The "Cool Docks" name is just marketing bluster, as the area is properly known as "Lao Ma Tou," or "The Old Docks." Like Xintiandi, this shiny new complex is a tasteful replica (as opposed to renovation) of the city's traditional old quarter; and it's full of a similar (if slightly thinner on the ground) selection of cafés and boutiques. For coffee opt for Caffein over the neighboring Starbucks; for Indian food look no further than Kebabs on the Grille; and if you want Greek food with a view, clamber up the white-washed stairs of Mythos

While you're there, take the time to explore the surrounding lanes, many of which remain untouched by the developers' brush and bulldozer, and stand in stark contrast to the cobblestones and fountains inside the complex proper.
