Update: Here's a handy list of all the indoor climbing walls in China so you can make like spiderman wherever you are in the middle kingdom. Tired of putting only your newfound nike knock-offs and haggling skills to the test? There's more to Shanghai than temples, museums, shops and clubs you know! Some of us need to spend some time clawing to fingerholds testing our mettle against 5.10 graded climbing routes and tying figure-eight knots from time to time... If you're looking for a good time and a little exercise, get your harness and rock-climbing shoes and run on over to the Shanghai Stadium Sports Center, where you'll find a variety of artificial climbing walls catering to novice up to intermediate level climbers. If you're not just passing through Shanghai and are planning to spend more time here, some of the group members arrange outdoor climbing expeditions on real rock a few hours from here, on Hangzhou's South High Hill. It's nothing compared to the karst-studded climbers paradise of Yangshuo, in Guanxi province, but it's fresh air, it's nature, and it's rock-climbing, so yeah, the best you can do without an intervening plane ride. Metro Lines 1, 3 and 4 both take you to the stadium and you can contact the sports center by dialing: (021) 6426-5178 Cheers! Happy climbing!
