Shanghai anime fans can get their kicks this month over at Xujiahui's Grand Gateway Mall, where the atrium is filled with colorful cartoon characters as part of an exhibition to promote some of Hong Kong's greatest comic creations.

The Hong Kong Ani-Com Carnival is in town until September 16 and, in addition to 30 full-size models and a variety of comic-inspired artworks scattered around Shanghai's largest shopping center, visitors can also enjoy a peek into an artist's studio and interactive events like a live comic painting, a kids' "Kung fu Kindergarten Dubbing Show" and a comic workshop by the rather comically named Mr. Bigsoil. The activities seem mainly targeted towards kids but the exhibition, featuring work of Hong Kong Comics and Animation Federation artists as well independents, will also likely appeal to animation aficionados. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, especially if you're not familiar with the characters but it certainly injects a bit of fun into the shopping experience.
