el gato verde, mexican food, shanghai If you're in Shanghai and hankering for cheap and tasty Mexican eats, then you need to get to know this cat: El Gato Verde, currently hanging out on Fenyang Lu near Taiyuan Lu. It's a short menu with just ten dishes, but they're anything but short on size or flavor, featuring punchy fresh salsa, creamy guacamole (be sure to order the real stuff; it's worth it), crispy nachos and a well-put-together set of tacos, enchiladas and quesadillas that come in beef, chicken or veggie. And best of all? Nothing rings in at more than RMB 35. Like the menu, the space is tiny—blink and you'll miss it. Downstairs is geared to take-away or solo dining with just a couple of bar stools but upstairs, five tables and a low ceiling make for a cozy space to chow down. The location is great for a pre-bar warm up for any of the numerous drinking holes that inhabit the nearby Dongping/Yueyang intersection. They also deliver within a 2 km radius for any order over RMB 35. El Gato Verde 11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. Address: 74 Fenyang Road, Shanghai Tel: (021) 6431 0043 [showtime]
