China Travel Photo of the Day: (babies') bums on the street

I came upon a rather cute--if strange--scene the other night. Parents and grandmother were giving two infants a bath on the side of the road in Shanghai. Who knows why they chose this particular venue, but they were snapping off a ton of pictures. When I asked if I could take a picture too, they laughed and warmly invited me to photograph to my heart's content. It wasn't the outdoor bathing itself that struck me, rather the fact that it had become the scene of an impromptu photo shoot.

In the Shanghai summer heat, it's not uncommon to see folks in the old town taking a shower under a road-side tap and sleeping on reed mats outdoors. Housing in the old town, though of great historical value, is so poorly ventilated and uncomfortable that on a hot Shanghai night, folks evacuate them wholesale and set up camp in the street. It's all part of the general friendly neighborly vibe that makes Chinese cities amazingly relaxed and pleasant places for all of the hustle, bustle and crowds.
